Meet the Farmer and the Florists

Amy from Sideroad Farm

The Flower Farmer

I have been growing flowers on one farm or another for the past 12 years. I’m originally from Victoria BC, but Pat and I moved here in 2013 to pursue our farming dreams in a place we could afford to settle down in. My favourite place to be on the farm is in our <1 acre flower field. It is teeming with life, colour and provides a sanctuary from everything else going on around me. I’m sure on Instagram flower farming seems quite glamorous but in reality is is just a sweaty, buggy and laborious any other kind of farming. That being said one of my favourite things to do is to cut flowers for others to enjoy and I have many moments where I can’t believe this is the dream job I have landed. We grow our flowers organically and “regeneratively”. What does that mean? We aim to capture carbon in our soil by building organic matter, enhancing soil life and processes, which ultimately results in healthier, higher quality crops. In the case of cut flowers, this quality is reflected in appearance and vase life. Thanks so much for supporting our farm and The Farmer & The Florists project. We hope you enjoy our flowers either in person or virtually by following along online.

The Florist

Driven by a pure love and appreciation for flowers, and plant life in general, my design style is heavily influenced by the garden. While I wouldn’t call myself an expert (or even mediocre) gardener, I will always draw inspiration from it. In particular, the English cottage style garden. Closely layered, informal plantings, overflowing with texture and bursting with colour all the while keeping it together like some sort of beautifully organized chaos. With this in mind, I always lean towards using a wide variety of flowers and foliage in my designs, incorporating as much seasonal and locally grown product as I possibly can.

Since establishing the studio in 2015, I have provided quality, garden style floral arrangements and creative installations for weddings and events in the Georgian Bay area and Toronto. It is truly an honour to be able to create and share beauty through flowers for my clients.
